Brecon Beacons

December 1982

A weekend cycling in the Brecon Beacons in December 1982 with Bath University Cycling Club. We stayed at Ty'n-y-Caeau (near Brecon) and Bryn Poeth Uchaf (near Rhandirmwyn) youth hostels.

Bryn Poeth Uchaf had no road access and no electricity. The warden lived at Hafod-y-pant, about half a mile down the valley from where we had to push our bikes up the path to reach the hostel. The hostel closed in 1998.

Our route between the two hostels took us through the Sennybridge MoD Training Area — despite red flags flying. We were stopped by the military who give us a severe dressing down, before allowing us to continue our route to Tirabad.

I didn't have a camera so the photos are from contemporary sources. Most are from Geograph, licenced under the Creative Commons cc-by-sa/2.0 licence.
